Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the foundation of ecosystem functioning and essential for life on the planet, providing services such as food production, water regulation, air quality, and protection against natural disasters. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in human health and disease prevention.
In light of the ongoing loss of biodiversity, the international community has strengthened commitments such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which sets ambitious targets for 2030, including the protection of 30% of terrestrial and marine areas and the reversal of biodiversity loss.
In this context, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports partner countries in biodiversity conservation, aligning its actions with global commitments and national targets.
IKI’s work is organized into three priority areas:
- Strengthening National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs): support for the review and implementation of policies, including the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities;
- Habitat protection and restoration: promotion of protected areas, ecosystem recovery, and the development of sustainable economic models;
- Mainstreaming biodiversity: integration of biodiversity into public policies and economic sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure, and finance.
Moreover, IKI adopts an integrated approach, connecting biodiversity, climate, and sustainable development, with a focus on nature-based solutions, ecosystem-based adaptation, and the promotion of more sustainable cities.
