The International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Government will support a new phase of the TerraMar II project with an investment of approximately €4 million over the next four years. The funding strengthens cooperation between Brazil and Germany to conserve marine and coastal biodiversity and promote the sustainable management of the so-called Blue Amazon.

The new agreement was formalized on World Oceans Day, celebrated on June 8, during a ceremony held at the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC). The signing of the supplementary agreement marks the beginning of a new phase of the “Protection and Integrated Management of Marine and Coastal Biodiversity” programme, an initiative coordinated by Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) in partnership with Brazilian and German institutions.

Through IKI funding, TerraMar II will continue efforts to protect ecosystems that are strategic for biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation, including mangroves, coral reefs, and estuaries. These environments play a vital role in conserving marine life, protecting coastal areas, and maintaining ecosystem services on which millions of people depend.

Conservation and Sustainable Development

In addition to environmental protection, TerraMar II seeks to strengthen sustainable development models in Brazil’s coastal regions. The project will support marine and coastal spatial planning initiatives, improve integrated ecosystem management, and promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

The activities will also help create economic opportunities for traditional communities and coastal populations, combining biodiversity conservation with income generation and improved quality of life.

Another key component of the initiative is the promotion of the blue economy, encouraging ocean-related economic activities that are environmentally responsible and capable of generating long-term social and economic benefits.
