The challenge
Brazil is already experiencing increasing impacts of climate change, including prolonged droughts, floods, landslides, heat waves, and biodiversity loss, affecting its population, economy, and ecosystems. These impacts increase the vulnerability of cities, rural areas, traditional communities, and businesses.
The solution
To address the impacts of climate change, it is essential to strengthen climate governance and coordination among different levels of government, sectors, and institutions. In this context, the project supports the implementation of adaptation management instruments, promoting integration among public authorities, the private sector, and civil society. This coordination strengthens the capacity for planning and implementing climate adaptation measures, making states and municipalities more resilient.
Key results
- Strengthening Brazil’s climate adaptation agenda by supporting the development of climate policies, strategies, and planning instruments at national, sectoral, state, and municipal levels, promoting the integration of adaptation into public policies and strengthening climate governance, including the Adaptation component of the Climate Plan (Plano Clima Adaptação), with 16 sectoral and thematic strategies.
- Production, dissemination, and application of climate risk information to support decision-making across different sectors and territories through the development of studies, risk assessments, climate data tools, training activities, and methodologies aimed at integrating adaptation into public policies, infrastructure, and territorial planning.
- Integration of climate change adaptation into corporate strategies, particularly in water security management, contributing to increased climate resilience in territories and businesses. This was achieved through capacity building, cost-benefit analyses, the provision of climate information, and business case studies to support the incorporation of adaptation measures into decision-making processes, while also fostering new cooperation arrangements among companies, governments, academia, and civil society.
- Training of more than 6,000 public and private sector stakeholders on topics and approaches related to climate change adaptation.
Why does this matter for Brazil?
The project strengthens the implementation of Brazil’s climate adaptation agenda, contributing to NDC targets and supporting the integration of climate resilience into public policies, economic sectors, and territories. By expanding institutional and professional capacities and promoting evidence-based decision-making, it supports more sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient development.
