The protection of tropical forests is essential to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Global Biodiversity Framework. Based on this, the Forest Guardians project seeks to strengthen the technical and institutional skills of indigenous peoples in Brazil to expand the protection of their territories.
The action focuses on two pilot territories and involves the creation and improvement of participatory monitoring systems, including socio-bioeconomic approaches and tailor-made training to meet local needs. The project also supports FUNAI and other indigenous organizations in structuring efficient communication and response chains, expanding the role of indigenous leaders — with special attention to women’s empowerment.
Indigenous women-led socio-bioeconomic initiatives will receive technical guidance and support to facilitate access to financing mechanisms. In addition, local experiences will be systematized together with the communities, in order to feed planning and implementation processes at regional and national levels.
