The Challenge

The project addresses the impacts of both water scarcity and excess water in Brazilian metropolitan regions, where high concentrations of population and critical infrastructure, social inequalities, and weak coordination among municipalities increase risks that affect millions of people and require integrated solutions.

The Solution

Through Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approaches, the project strengthens the adaptive capacities of vulnerable communities, supports systemic changes in urban water management, and promotes the development of climate-resilient cities and metropolitan regions.

Key Results to be achieved

  • Participatory climate adaptation strategies based on data and engagement with metropolitan institutions, local governments, and communities;
  • Evidence-based Nature-based Solution pilot projects testing water-sensitive urban interventions;
  • Strengthened institutional capacities and peer-learning mechanisms on climate adaptation;
  • Enhanced financing and metropolitan governance for climate adaptation.

Why Does This Matter for Brazil?

The project operationalizes targets of Brazil’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) related to Nature-based Solutions and climate adaptation by promoting ecosystem restoration, climate-resilient urban planning, and sustainable water management. It is also aligned with the federal framework for adaptation planning, the National Adaptation Plan (Plano Clima – Adaptation), the National Urban Development Policy (PNDU), and the Green and Resilient Cities Program (PCVR).
