Sustainable public procurement plays a strategic role in the implementation of public policies and the promotion of sustainable development, contributing directly to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rather than simply considering the lowest price, sustainable procurement assesses the economic, social and environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle of goods, works and services, promoting the best value for society.

The guide for defining and applying sustainability criteria in public procurement was published by the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services, as part of the EcoAdvance project.

The project promotes the use of environmental labelling and sustainable public procurement to transform consumption and production patterns, and is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The guide was developed in collaboration with the Secretariat for Management and Innovation in Public Services (SEGES) of Brazil’s Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), a policy partner of the project, and numerous relevant stakeholders involved in the issue through a co-creation process.
