The Três Unidos Indigenous Community, located in the Rio Negro Environmental Protection Area (APA), in the Brazilian Amazon, will now benefit from a new solar energy system that will provide continuous access to clean energy for around 45 families in the region. The initiative was made possible with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and implemented by the Fundação Amazônia Sustentável (FAS).
The inauguration of the system will take place on May 22 and represents another important step in international cooperation efforts aimed at promoting sustainable development and conserving the Amazon rainforest.
With the implementation of the solar power plant, the community is expected to reduce diesel consumption by more than 35,000 liters per year, avoiding the emission of approximately 111 tons of CO₂ annually. In addition to its positive climate impacts, the project directly contributes to improving the quality of life of local residents by expanding access to safe, reliable, and sustainable energy.

The initiative also strengthens local economic activities, especially community-based tourism developed within the Puranga Conquista Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS). With greater energy stability, local lodges, restaurants, and other community services will be able to expand their activities and better welcome visitors.
The action is part of IKI’s broader efforts to support sustainable and inclusive climate solutions, promoting low-carbon alternatives while contributing to the protection of Amazon biodiversity and the strengthening of traditional communities.
