The Independent Complaint Mechanism (ICM) of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) enables people who experience (potential) negative social and/or environmental impacts from IKI projects, or who wish to report the misuse of funds, to submit complaints and seek redress. In addition, the mechanism contributes to:
- monitoring and improving the environmental and social impacts of projects;
- preventing unintended negative impacts of projects that may go unnoticed by ZUG and the Federal Ministries for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), and Foreign Affairs (AA);
- supporting the appropriate use of public funds; and
- promoting compliance with good international practices.
The mechanism is housed within Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH, the German Federal Government’s project management agency for the IKI. Overall responsibility for the complaint mechanism lies with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), which works closely with the Federal Foreign Office (AA).
